Documentation

Welcome to the documentation for the Attic Oratory Database.

The Attic Oratory Database is a project dedicated to showcasing the corpus of Classical Athenian Oratory. This site catalogues the speeches of Attic Oratory, the events for which these speeches were written, and the people involved in these events and mentioned in these speeches.

Navigate to the Indices page to see the different Indices in the project. To navigate through the available texts, use the Corpus Index. To navigate through the legal events, use the Event Index. To navigate through the people, use the Person Index. To navigate through the authors, used to Author Index.

The site also contains dictionaries, created using TEDI (the ontoTerminology EDItor). These dictionaries are accessible through the Dictionaries page. The Legal Processes dictionary defines the legal processes in Classical Athens, the Legal Bodies dictionary defines the government actors involved in legal processes, the Legal Participants dictionary defines the non-government actors involved in legal events, and the Oratory Types dictionary defines the types of speeches in the corpus.

The Attic Oratory Database was created by Rachel Milio as a part of the PhD thesis “Semantic Annotation and Attic Oratory” (2024-2027). This PhD is being completed as a part of the TALOS Project at the University of Crete, supervised by Professor Christophe Roche, Dr. Maria Papadopoulou, and Professor Melina Tamiolaki.

We gratefully acknowledge the generous funding of the European Commission under the ERA Chair Project TALOS AI for SSH (Grant agreement ID: 101087269).
