Scope

Research Aims

The Attic Oratory Database aims to present and contextualize the corpus of Attic Oratory. Attic Oratory is a crucial resource for understanding Classical Athenian society, but provides challenges as a source. The Attic Oratory Database demystifies the corpus, contextualizing speeches based on the legal events they were written for and disambiguating the relevant people.

Disciplinary Scope

The materials presented on the webpage are limited to the canonical corpus of Attic Oratory, written from 419 BC to 320 BC. This does not include more recently discovered fragments or non-oratory works by canon authors. Furthermore, this does not include references to historical figures made in sources outside of the corpus.

Future Expansion

In the future of this database, we hope to expand to include more thorough commentary on each speech. We also intend to add more explanatory details on the prosopographical entries, including links to Wikidata entries (minting new Wikidata entries when necessary).
